When your gut is happy, your skin often follows, and that radiant glow doesn’t just come from skincare. More and more, we’re realising that beauty and wellness start from the inside. At Spill the Tea, we’re all about supporting your body gently, naturally, and deliciously, and yes, that starts with the gut.

Personally, I was constantly doing skin care growing up (thanks to a lot of media attention on skin care routines). This helped in terms of keeping the skin clean but what if we are already constantly keeping up with the routine? What if no matter the products we use, our skin still breaks out?

What was an accidental discovery became a fundamental morning routine for me and indirectly bettered my skin and helped with my bloating.

Why Gut Health Matters for Skin

Your gut and your skin are surprisingly connected. Known as the gut-skin axis, this link explains how your digestive system and skin communicate through hormones, immune responses, and microbiome interactions. When your digestion is off, it can lead to inflammation, breakouts and dullness. A balanced gut microbiome, on the other hand, supports nutrient absorption, regulates hormones, and reduces internal stress—all of which contribute to glowing, healthy skin.

When your gut is working properly, your body can better absorb key nutrients like vitamins A, C, and E, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids—all crucial for skin repair and radiance. Plus, a healthy gut helps eliminate toxins and maintain a healthy inflammatory response, preventing the kind of internal chaos that often shows up on your face.

How Tea Can Help

Herbal teas have been used for centuries to soothe the digestive system and promote detoxification. Many ingredients naturally support gut health, reduce bloating, and calm inflammation from the inside out. And unlike harsh cleanses or supplements, tea is a gentle, daily ritual you can actually look forward to. A big key word here is NATURALLY. This means that there are no reliance on chemicals or drugs, supplements in the shape of pills that really threw me off.

Teas not only hydrate your body, which is essential for healthy skin, but they also contain bioactive compounds like polyphenols and flavonoids that feed the good bacteria in your gut. Plus, sipping a warm beverage can help activate the parasympathetic nervous system—the one responsible for rest, digestion, and healing. In other words, tea helps you slow down and heal at the same time.

Our Favourite Gut-Friendly Teas for Glowing Skin
  1. Peppermint Tea
Great for: Bloating, indigestion, and skin inflammation
Peppermint relaxes the digestive tract and supports smoother digestion. It’s especially helpful after heavy meals or when bloating strikes. As digestion improves, so does your skin—less inflammation, less puffiness, and a more radiant complexion.

  2. Ginger Tea
Great for: Gut motility, circulation, and detoxification
Ginger is a powerhouse anti-inflammatory. It stimulates digestion, helps reduce nausea, and promotes circulation. Better circulation means more oxygen and nutrients delivered to your skin, leaving you with that lit-from-within look.

  3. Fennel Tea
    Great for: Bloating and gas
Fennel seeds have long been used in Ayurveda and traditional medicine for gut health. They help relax the muscles in your gastrointestinal system, making digestion smoother and less gassy. Plus, fennel’s antimicrobial properties can help clear up breakouts and promote a healthy gut environment.

  4. Dandelion Root Tea
Great for: Liver support and detoxification
Dandelion is a detox hero. It supports liver function, which is key in processing and removing toxins from the body. When your liver isn’t overloaded, your skin becomes less prone to congestion, and you’ll notice fewer breakouts and more clarity.

  5. Chamomile Tea
Great for: Gut inflammation, sleep, and stress
Chamomile is gentle and deeply soothing—for both your belly and your mind. Its anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties calm your gut lining, which helps with digestion and reduces skin irritation caused by internal stress or food sensitivities.

  6. Green Tea
Great for: Antioxidants and overall skin health
Green tea is rich in catechins, a type of antioxidant that supports both gut flora and skin clarity. It helps fight oxidative stress, supports immune health, and has even been shown to reduce sebum production—great news for acne-prone skin.

Tips to Maximise the Gut-Glow Connection
  • Stay Consistent: One cup won’t transform your skin overnight. Incorporate gut-friendly teas into your daily routine for lasting results. For me, it was only after a year of constant inconsistency of drinking ginger tea and green tea that made me realise that "hey....I am on to something"

  • Pair with Probiotic-Rich Foods: Think yogurt, kimchi, or kombucha to support your gut microbiome. I absolutely love kimchi as a snack, appetiser or to satisfy a craving!

  • Avoid Gut Irritants: Cut down on processed foods, alcohol, and excessive sugar, which can disrupt your gut flora. Personally, I cut out alcohol as it was also messing up my skin, my sleep schedule and I generally just hated how drinking made me feel. I did not eat candies as well but I do have a sweet tooth!!

  • Stay Hydrated: Tea counts toward your water intake, but make sure to drink enough fluids overall for clear, supple skin. It is so easy to forget to hydrate especially when your mind is busy focused on other things. Getting a 1.25L cup with a straw helped me out a lot and I sometimes keep sipping unconsciously...

How to Make It a Ritual

Instead of trying to overhaul your diet or chase the latest beauty trend, start with one small change: a cup of tea a day. Choose a blend that supports your body’s needs and take a few minutes to be present with it. Sip slowly. Breathe. Let it be a self-care moment that nourishes your body and your soul.

Create a cozy ritual around your tea moment—maybe it’s your morning grounding, a midday digestion break, or a bedtime wind-down. Light a candle, put your phone away, and truly enjoy the act of slowing down.

At Spill the Tea, we craft blends designed to work with your body, not against it. Whether you're sipping post-meal or winding down for the night, let tea be your gentle reset. Because true beauty? It starts in the belly.

Glow from the gut, glow from within. ✨
