What’s That Ingredient?

Hi everyone,

I’m the Chief Tea Blender’s mum! While my daughter, is hard at work creating your special brews with the freshest and finest ingredients, I’ll be stepping in from time to time to share some insights about the world of tea. Think of me as your tea storyteller, here to uncover the secrets behind every cup you enjoy. 🙂

My daughter's tea journey began as a personal quest. Like many of us, she struggled with insomnia and stress, both from her studies and the challenges of working life. She initially turned to store-bought supplements, which offered some relief, but their effects didn’t last. Sometimes they stopped working altogether, or she had to increase the dosage—an unsustainable solution in the long run.

This frustration sparked a question: Could there be a better, more natural way to manage these issues?

Her curiosity led her into the fascinating world of tea blending. After countless hours of research, trial and error, and lots of taste tests, she crafted some truly amazing tea blends. At first, it was just for family and friends, but their enthusiastic feedback encouraged her to share her creations with a wider audience. (Okay, I’ll admit I’m her mum, so you might think I’m biased, but we even did a market survey with samples—and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive!)

People loved the flavours, and some even sent suggestions on how to tweak the ingredient ratios for an even better taste and health experience. This community feedback is part of what makes our tea blends so special—they’re made with care, love, and input from people like you.

With all this in mind, I thought, Why not start a blog series to dive deeper into the ingredients we use? Some of them might not be familiar to everyone, so I’m here to explore them with you. Let’s start with one of our most beloved ingredients: Rooibos.

What Is Rooibos?

First things first: How do you pronounce it?
It’s pronounced Roy-boss—a name that sounds just as unique as the tea itself.

Rooibos is a plant native to South Africa, specifically the Cederberg mountains in the Western Cape province. It’s not your typical tea plant (Camellia sinensis); Rooibos is actually a shrub that thrives in this region’s unique climate and soil conditions. It’s so specialized that it can only grow here, making Rooibos a truly exotic ingredient for your cup.

Also known as red tea or red bush tea, Rooibos is most commonly enjoyed as a fermented herbal tea, which gives it a rich red colour and a naturally sweet, earthy flavour. There’s also a green, unfermented version of Rooibos, which has a milder taste but retains all its health benefits.

The best part? Rooibos is completely caffeine-free! This makes it a fantastic option for those who want to enjoy tea in the evening without worrying about losing sleep.

A Little History of Rooibos

Rooibos has a fascinating history. Indigenous South African communities were the first to discover its benefits, using it as a herbal remedy for various ailments. Later, in the 1700s, Dutch settlers in South Africa began drinking Rooibos as an affordable alternative to imported black tea.

Over the centuries, Rooibos has grown in popularity worldwide, celebrated for its distinct flavor and potential health benefits. Today, it’s a staple in many households and a key ingredient in innovative tea blends like ours.

Health Benefits of Rooibos

What makes Rooibos so special? Aside from its delicious flavour, it’s packed with potential health benefits. Let’s break down what it can do for you:

  1. Rich in Antioxidants:
Rooibos contains powerful antioxidants like aspalathin and quercetin. These compounds help protect your cells from damage caused by free radicals, which can reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease.

Fun fact: Aspalathin is unique to Rooibos, so you won’t find it in other teas!

  2. Heart Health Support:
Some studies suggest that Rooibos may lower blood pressure by inhibiting an enzyme called ACE, which causes blood vessels to contract. Relaxed blood vessels mean better circulation and healthier blood pressure levels.

  3. Cholesterol Benefits:
Drinking Rooibos regularly may help improve your cholesterol profile by reducing LDL (bad cholesterol) and increasing HDL (good cholesterol). A healthy heart starts with a healthy cup of tea!

  4. Potential Cancer-Fighting Properties:
Rooibos contains antioxidants like quercetin and luteolin, which are believed to combat cancer cells and inhibit tumor growth. While more research is needed to confirm these effects, it’s encouraging to know that your cup of Rooibos is packed with these beneficial compounds.

  5. May Help Manage Diabetes:
The aspalathin in Rooibos has shown promise in animal studies for balancing blood sugar levels and improving insulin resistance—key factors in managing Type 2 diabetes. Although more human studies are needed, it’s an exciting area of research.

How to Enjoy Rooibos

One of the best things about Rooibos is its versatility. Its naturally sweet, earthy flavour makes it enjoyable on its own, but you can also get creative:

  • Classic Style: Brew it like black or green tea, and enjoy it hot with or without milk and sugar.

  • Iced Tea: Rooibos makes a refreshing iced tea, perfect for hot summer days. Add a splash of lemon or a hint of honey for extra flavour.

  • Lattes: Combine Rooibos with steamed milk and a dash of cinnamon for a cozy, caffeine-free latte.

  • Tea Cocktails: Yes, Rooibos can even be used in cocktails! Its unique flavor pairs beautifully with fruits and herbs.
